the story of lupin begins in paris, in 1905. arsne lupin is a swaggering french burglar who is quite unlike the other thieves of the day. dressed elegantly, he has impeccable manners and is well-spoken. he is also a ladies man. as a young man, he was adored by the beautiful alexandra duflot de morigny, who was also under the spell of the charming gentleman thief. when alexandra was killed, arsne buried her in a jewelry box, and he proceeded to rob the box. the next day, he was caught by the police. they knew he had been in the house, they just couldn’t prove it. he was sentenced to ten years in prison, but before he could go, alexandra’s father arranged for him to take a job as a traveling salesman in a small town in france. she was buried in a different jewelry box, which he stole after a year. a year later, he was again arrested. he was sentenced to life in prison, but his sentence was commuted and he was sent to an institution for the criminally insane. he escaped several times. when he was finally caught, he was charged with fifteen other crimes. arsne escaped to the country, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
arsne lupin appeared regularly in the french press in the 1920s and 1930s. there was a follow-up film starring lupin in 1947. unfortunately, it wasnt very good. the follow-up film, the thief who came in from the cold, starred charlton heston and had a better plot and better performances. in the french-speaking world, arsne lupin also appeared in le grand coup in 1956 and la pistole bleue in 1960. 3d9ccd7d82
